ALIAS: "Riv"
EPITHET: Of the Crimson Blaze
NAMEDAY: 16 Sun of 3rd Astral Moon
AGE: 35
RACE: Wildwood Elezen • Coerthan-Shroud
GENDER: Male
SEXUALITY: Gay
MARITAL STATUS: Divorced, Single
CANON JOBS: Monk, Bard, (Warrior/Dancer), Culinarian
ECHO USER: Can understand all languages. He does not know he has the Echo and thinks it's normal.DISABILITY: Speech issues - stammers; repeats words mid-sentence; long pauses to remember more difficult words; difficulty in expressing emotions verbally.PERSONALITY: A soft-spoken fellow, genuinely kind and helpful, helping out where he can. But do not mistake his gentleness for weakness: Rivaer has travelled much and worked as a bodyguard and wildlife ranger, and as a result is a lot more grounded than his pleasant expression might express. Despite his speech impediment he is a friendly, good-natured, well-mannered jock who is absolutely notorious for going from zero to 100 quite enthusiastically, and being quite an intense personality to get used to.

PROFESSION: Rivaer's initial side hustle as a bodyguard was profitable with little effort from the already-intimidating elezen, but boredom soon saw him turning to culling wildlife and hunting down dangerous marks to keep the locals safe. Consider him a monster hunter.COMBAT SKILLS: His martial prowess lies in unarmed combat, but he is also skilled in the use of a longbow. His martial style is his own invention, capitalising on his build as an elezen and tapping into repressed feelings to provide immense strength and speed behind his punches. After picking up the Kriegstanz he is now able to use aether from others in combat. In the blur of combat the elezen would appear to be as if on fire. His martial art style is based on Muay Thai/kickboxing and, in the future, capoeira.HOBBIES: Reading, dance, playing Triple Triad, cooking.BIRTHPLACE: Twinbrooks (See this page for more)RELIGION: Rivaer accepts the existence of the deities but does not believe in seeking help from them.PATRON DEITY: Oschon :)FEARS: Being seen as slow or stupid due to his speech impediment, not being able to pay forward his brother's hard work, and losing control of his repressed feelings.ADDRESS: His personal home is his hunting tavern at Plot #29, Ward 23, the Mist. (Sophia, Materia DC)

physical

his looks • his effects

HAIR: Black streaked with purple, knotted into a messy ponytail. When untied his hair is wavy and reaches below his shoulders. Strands of hair loosen from his hairline on a regular basis. Sometimes he may pull his fringe back entirely; other times he lets some of his hair hang on either side of his face.EYES: Forest greenHEIGHT: 6 fulms 9 ilmsBUILD: Broad-shouldered, toned. Rivaer's build is akin to a trained martial artist - more muscle mass than the average, not slender but with a strong core.DISTINGUISHING FEATURES: Scar on his left cheek starting from near the inner corner of his eye all the way down to his jaw. Pale red band tattooed across his eyes. Fairly dark lips and always with a calm, pleasant expression.

COMMON ACCESSORIES: Gold clasps on both of his fairly large ears. He prefers long finger rings that at least cover a whole joint, one on each hand. Wears small red clasps or a single faded red tassel from the left earlobe. Cord necklace with monk soulstone. He may occasionally wear his wedding ring.WEAPONS: His weapon of choice is always his fists. When he's not in his adventuring garb he wraps linen around his hands to protect them. His adventuring garb is to the right, showing off his build and lending to his intimidating appearance, with armoured gauntlets. As a hunter he uses a strong longbow and a short sword, the latter of which he has shed since he and blades just don't get along.VOICE: Rivaer has an accent where he rolls his Rs and a slight lilting tone. This is apparently somewhat unique to his hometown. This accent is not distinct due to his stilted manner of speech. His voice is pitched as normal compared to his brother's baritone. The closest he sounds is The Lone Minstrel in this video.

ELJA MIREIT
the azuresong

Under the tutelage of Elja Mireit, known to the locals as the Azuresong and self-declared Wood-Warder of Thavnair, Rivaer studied the Kriegstanz under the viera for purposes of constructive aether conversion into opening chakra. While the methodology is still unrefined, Rivaer now has the ability to convert the aether from negative emotions into strength.

general hooks

well-travelled • hunts to help

As an elezen with perpetual wanderlust, Rivaer has travelled to many countries. He is most present in Eorzea, but can also be present in the Empty or the Near East. Those interest in Turali hooks can scroll down further below. As a wildlands ranger, Rivaer acts like a cross between a monster scholar and a clan hunter - he studies the local wildlife and the ecosystem, and works to solve conflicts between man and beast.

easy as ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

hunter for hire

Rivaer actively takes interest in any conflict between man and beast in any area he happens to be in. He has no affiliation with Clan Centurio, and may run into Centurio hunters wanting the glory and fame to themselves. (He does not care about the nuts.) He can also be hired by scholars, artisans or merchants who want valuable monster parts for research, crafting or sale respectively.

teach him to fish

Rivaer hails from a town that has made fishing its primary industry, which would have made him a fishing elf - if he actually liked fishing. He gets bored easily, which makes learning harder for him. This is a lighthearted hook designed to get this elezen to learn that fishing isn't all just a boring wait for a gamble at something good. This doesn't need to be achieved immediately for best results!

not hard, not easy either ~~~~~

wildlife control

As a ranger Rivaer has a specific talent - he takes into account the wildlife and the ecosystem because he prioritises relocation and co-existence over simply killing the animals. He takes time to work, studying the wildlife and ensuring that both man and beast do not interfere with each other first. Equipped with makeshift traps and non-lethal weapons, he has the experience to make peace without bloodshed: something, perhaps, not everyone is in agreement with for their own personal agendas.

bodyguard

As his first job cutting his teeth on making gil, Rivaer makes an excellent protection escort and bodyguard for anyone who needs a martial-skilled companion. There's a reason why it's no longer his job however, and you'll need to present a seriously good case to get him to accompany you (not just gil - has to be for a good cause!). If you can convince him he'll do it in the most fun way possible - reluctantly, but every bit worth your coin.

work for it, now ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

self-taught...

"Brawler," he'll tell you, "not monk."There's no denying that he uses techniques similar to that of the Fists of Rhalgr monks of Gyr Abania, and some prodding will reveal that he did indeed study their work. But he has his reasons for not becoming one - instead he has more important priorities such as looking for artisans who are able to make gear that helps him channel his aether properly in aiding those techniques. Calling metalworkers, weavers and leatherworkers who know their aetherology - and parties nosing around for his Opinions. Note that this is not a combat hook.

...combat prodigy

No, he won't teach you.But he spends much of his time improving on what he knows, and never looks down on others for differing martial styles. He seeks to learn... something about keeping himself in control and doing it in a manner most constructive. If he's so gifted, why is he seeking out something other than perfection? Could you get down to the bottom of it? And while he insists on not being a teacher (reasons?), perhaps you could learn from him in other ways.

journey to tural ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

fellow hunter

He's always up for learning more hunting techniques. While he is unlikely to adopt a new job (there are no plans on becoming a Viper), he's still interested in how the Mamool Ja, Hhetsarro and Xbr'aal hunt for their livelihoods. This hook is open to all Turali hunters of all sorts.Since he's also from Eorzea, Turali hunters are welcome to ask him about the whole hunts system Koana introduced to Tural and learn from him as well.

the other type of hunter

This is spoilers for the second half of the Dawntrail MSQ.If you are an Alexandrian hunter who uses feral souls, if you want to meet someone who will be quite opposed to it and want to be interested in considering other avenues of hunting, Rivaer is a good candidate.

the fishing town of twinbrooks

on the border of coerthas-shroud

Right on the border between Coerthas and the Shroud, and between a fork in the White Maiden river, a town straddles both distributaries - hence the name Twinbrooks. People from this town have a distinct lilting rhotic accent with hard emphasis on rolling their Rs.It was founded by a subset of Gelmorran elezen who, tired of war with the newly-migrated hyur and the Elementals, sought refuge on the outskirts of the Shroud. As a result the population is majority elezen with a smattering of hyur and an even smaller fraction of Keeper miqo'te. They avoid entering the Shroud as much as they can.The Seventh Umbral Calamity destroyed their farmlands at the base of the mountains that form the Coerthan border. As a result, the populace turned to fishing, artisanal crafts and alchemy and medicine creation. These are the town's staple exports. Their industries offer unique goods for trade, thus making trade with Twinbrooks immensely desirable. Currently they have good trade relations with Gridania and Ishgard.Due to the conservative, prideful nature of the town's population, it is difficult to get along with the population. The people are protective of their own. However, they have a strict custom on hospitality and genuinely believe in helping their fellow man, a tradition carried down from their ancestors who disagreed with the Elementals, and as such the town will put aside its differences to be hospitable and kind to those in need.

The Pelderain family from which Rivaer and Silvaire hail are actually the Coerthan-Shroud branch of a big family. One branch can be found in Ishgard and another in Gridania, but this branch specifically has - and wants - nothing to do with the others. Click the title above to meet the current family. They are a lineage of traders and negotiators, though one or two will end up working as fighters or researchers. The town they live in relies on them primarily to facilitate trade and keep coin flowing both in and out. As such these elezen are more open-minded and progressive compared to their Gridanian and Ishgardian cousins. They welcome other races with open arms, including traditionally scorned races like duskwights, and don't hold racial prejudices - after all, coin cares not for blood or skin colour or shape, just where it comes from and where it needs to go.There's nothing skeevy about them, they are meant to be the good guys though still flawed in their decisions. This is reflected in their two oldest sons. They are hardly xenophobic, instead appreciating and respecting the cultures of others as best they can, and do not care for class. Their bloodline has had many an Ishgardian and Gridanian, both poor and rich, both duskwight and wildwood, provided they can also be as open-minded as them.Traditionally at fourteen summers the children pick up a trade or a fighting style to learn. At eighteen, those who are proficient at combat receive a facial tattoo of their choice to mark themselves as the fighters of the family. Once they hit puberty they leave the town to make their own way in the world with no help or coin from their well-off family, and very often they succeed. This is not to say that they don't have their own personal problems and everything is alright in their world. That is their challenge to overcome when they leave the safety of home, and needless to say they are well aware of this. They simply prefer to experience the reality of the world than remain sheltered.

  • I am 100% a Discord RPer. I don't expect you to post immediately.

  • I prefer combat RP to be preplanned in OOC discussion beforehand. I will not do dice rolls. For me, the consequences of combat must be relevant to the characters' development.

  • This player is 25+ and would prefer RP partners who are 21+ due to mature topics associated with this character.

  • I really enjoy exploring personality clashes, the consequences of conforming to society, and investigating and journeying with character partnerships. Above all else I favour collaborative character-driven plots.

  • Definite no: Character death, character maiming, excessive violence and gore, romance/ERP.

  • I work within the lore and narrative structure presented in FFXIV. Lore bending is fine as long as it is believable.

When he came back, he looked at Lysander. "Bad experience? Previous... lover?" He nodded quietly. "I understand. Would... would say I... had one? Sort of? Eh." There was a shrug here, then Rivaer shook his head. "I... To this, this day, I still... cannot judge. He was... well-meaning. But, he, the, the relationship, was not healthy. He, really did like me. But did not, was not aware, of, of what he was doing... and did not, did not accept, that he might, might have been... in the wrong. Maybe I... am a, a fool, for thinking that, that he might... might have a point. Or... he was, was doing it for, for my benefit."The elezen looked down at the set table with the pot in the middle, seeming wistful. "But... I am, am doing better. Without him. No more doubt. No more... questioning. Myself. If, if I was... wrong, or right. Or being selfish. Or... you know. Which, which sort of... really shows. How much... how much someone can, can have an, have an effect on you. For, for the rest of your life. I wondered. Sil told, told me... to follow what I, I wanted. I did. Was it worth it? Well." He looked back up and smiled. "The, the love I have, now? That is, that is worth enough. I... only hope, Sil... one day, lives, experiences, feels the same way. Gets to, have the, the best part. Sharing with... with someone."
